Entertaining: Gold Medal in Ice Luge

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Having attended several parties, soirees, and get togethers over the holidays, we endeavor in January to provide you with some entertaining tips and tricks.

Art imitates life... if you've had enough to drink

Art imitates life... if you've had enough to drink

The ice luge – few party gimmicks compare in versatility, novelty, and brutal effectiveness. Need an easy drinking game? Themed party ideas? The ice luge is party city. The setup is simple: go wholesale and buy one piece of block ice. Cut a slight incline in the block ice using a chisel, chainsaw, or similar. Carve one chute from the top to the bototm of the incline. For an extra Handsome time, carve two similar chutes and hold races with your fellow party goers. Buy booze. That’s it – one of the best drinking games is at your disposal. Booze at the top becomes ice cold by the time it reaches your mouth at the bottom.

At first blush (trust me, someone will be blushing), this doesn’t seem like the classiest way to get a party going. (Read on …)

Some weeks ago a gaggle of excellent high school friends were in town for a wedding. After the rehearsal dinner things devolved into karaoke at Orchid in Koreatown. This was the most respectful photo of the (extensive) set that still conveyed the overwhelming amount of fun we had. Congrats to Ian & Lindsey.

Handsome Drinks – Infusing Tequila

It all starts so innocently

It all starts so innocently

When the Sunset Junction festival comes to town, it’s Handsome to dig up some drink recipes and put on a show. Summer cocktail recipes come and go – oftentimes you get something too complicated, too sweet, or vodka cocktail recipes. For Sunset Junction 2008 we took a cue from WASPy Handsome and infused our own tequila.

Infused tequila has many advantages that other party drinks (try finding martini recipes that are this easy). (Read on …)

Suffice to say, it was this type of weekend

  • Other festival reviews and commentary
  • Instructions for frying a turkey
  • Cocktail suggestions for summer parties
  • Of course, some special Junction-themed Handsome Party

Handsome Party – This is Exhausting

All this reading is making us tired

All this reading is making us tired

Between working hard, playing hard, and doing our best drinking, eating, and style research for this little side project, we occasionally find ourselves completely exhausted. Nothing puts you to sleep like a good book and a comfy chair (we’re looking forward to football season…).

Handsome Drinks – Sacramento Valley Verdelho

At this outing, verdelho augmented the usual summer reds

Dirty Handsome and Pretty Handsome are fortunate enough to live near Silverlake Wine (sic), a very good Los Angeles wine store stocking only small production and unusual wines. While provisioning for our recent Trainzaganza ’08 outing (more on that later), we stumbled upon a bottle of Dancing Coyote’s 2006 Verdelho from Clarksburg on the Sacramento Delta. We immediately bought the bottle, as it had been years since we’d seen a verdelho on shelves this side of the Pacific.

Verdelho is a crisp white grape originally hailing from Madeira in Portugal (Portugo!); it’s dry, citrusy taste is a pitch perfect, very welcome polar opposite to buttery California chardonnays. (Read on …)

Our Handsome Take on the Bellini

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Drinking is an important part of being Handsome, for better or worse. It puts a smile on our face and keeps our lawyas busy as hell. One of an ongoing series of recipes, lamentations, and observations about drinking.

All the makings for Handsome Bellinis

All the makings for Handsome Bellinis

Recently, Dr. Handsome’s wife noted on Sunday afternoon at 4pm when we were watching a movie on Tivo and had accomplished many feats earlier that day (eaten fast food, napped, complained about feeling like death) that “we needed a hobby.” We thought we already had a pretty great hobby, but apparently she meant something other than drinking ourselves silly and dancing like idiots.

We’re still working on that (college football is still at least 24 days away), but in the meantime I managed to invent a pretty amiable summer drink. (Read on …)
